PowerCell is partnering with H2MAC, an ambitious European project funded by the European Union, aimed at designing hydrogen fuel cells suitable for the rigors of the construction and mining sectors. By developing scalable fuel cell technology for off-road mobile machinery, this initiative seeks to address the environmental challenges faced by these industries.
PowerCell Group is joining the H2MAC project, a four-year initiative funded by the European Union. This initiative aims to develop fuel cells that can withstand the tough conditions of the construction and mining sectors, such as dust and intense vibrations. The project is dedicated to designing a scalable hydrogen fuel cell powertrain for non-road mobile machinery (NRMM). PowerCell will provide essential expertise in system integration for hostile environments. The project milestones include delivery of the systems scheduled between late 2025 and early 2026, with the first operational tests in the fall of 2026.
PowerCell’s CEO, Richard Berkling, stated that this participation highlights PowerCell’s commitment to innovating hydrogen-electric solutions that meet the complex needs of industries with a high environmental impact. The H2MAC project aims to drive the sustainability of NRMM applications and deploy hydrogen technology in off-road industries. PowerCell expects that the lessons learned will encourage future innovations, supporting a heavier machinery sector that is more green and resilient.

Togglepowercell group and the h2mac project: towards greener heavy machinery
The PowerCell group is excited about its participation in the European project H2MAC, financed by the European Union. This four-year initiative aims to develop hydrogen fuel cells capable of withstanding the demanding conditions of the construction and mining sectors. The main objective is to create a reliable propulsion system for non-road mobile machines (NRMM), considering the challenges posed by dust and intense vibrations. The project, supported by the Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking, is set to begin in 2024 with the delivery of essential systems between the fourth quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026, and the first real-world tests as early as fall 2026.
robust solutions for extreme conditions
With a total funding of €793,000, PowerCell is ready to offer its expertise in system integration and applications specifically tailored for hostile environments. This project enables PowerCell to demonstrate the robustness of its technologies in environments simulating the real conditions of heavily impactful industries, thereby reducing local air pollution and initiating a viable decarbonization of hard-to-transform sectors like construction and mining. The solutions promised by H2MAC seek to extend the use of hydrogen to high-intensity industries, reaffirming PowerCell’s commitment to the pathway towards a more sustainable world.
migration to hydrogen technologies
The H2MAC project aims not only to transform current practices but also to extend the use of hydrogen technology to areas requiring high off-road performance. The lessons learned from this promising project will contribute to future innovations in the heavy machinery sector, thereby addressing crucial energy challenges. Moreover, this represents an important step for PowerCell, which, through its diverse applications and experiences, is actively participating in the transition towards green energy solutions.
