The renewable natural gas project in Davis represents a major advancement that could transform our approach to waste management. By integrating innovative methods for converting organic waste into green energy, this project offers a sustainable solution to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. Not only does it allow for the valorization of waste that would otherwise end up in our landfills, but it also contributes to the fight against climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This model could well become a benchmark to follow, paving the way for more virtuous waste management practices in favor of the planet. Embracing this approach could revolutionize our circular economy while fostering a collective awareness of the importance of sustainability in our modern societies.

ToggleAn Innovative and Sustainable Collaboration
Ameresco, Inc., a leader in clean technologies specializing in energy efficiency and renewable energy, has been chosen to carry out a revolutionary project in partnership with the Wasatch Integrated Waste Management District (WIWMD) in Layton, Utah. This ambitious project will convert landfill gas into renewable natural gas (RNG), thus significantly contributing to reducing CO2 emissions.
Positive Environmental Impacts
The new RNG production site in Davis will capture the gases generated by the decomposition of organic waste in the landfill. This initiative will not only reduce harmful methane emissions but also decrease more than 953 million pounds of carbon dioxide each year. To put this in perspective, this is equivalent to removing 79,223 cars from the road or planting more than 98,000 acres of forest.
Waste Valuation: A New Resource of Green Energy
As the owner of the treatment complex, Ameresco will handle all aspects from the design to the operation of the site. The natural gas produced will replace the use of more than 8 million BTUs of fossil fuels, such as coal and natural gas, each year. This transforms an environmental liability into a valuable renewable energy resource.
The Importance of Decarbonizing Landfills
According to Michael Bakas, Executive Vice President of Ameresco, “harvesting the byproducts of waste to replace fossil fuels is crucial for the transition to clean and renewable energy.” By converting landfill gases into RNG, we are making a significant step towards a cleaner and healthier environment. Why continue drilling for deeply buried natural gas when we can utilize what is already present in our atmosphere?
A Long-Term Partnership and Clear Goals
Nathan Rich, Executive Director of WIWMD, emphasizes that this project is a fantastic opportunity to transform an environmental burden into a renewable energy source. Following the success of their first landfill gas conversion project nearly 20 years ago, they are excited to renew these efforts to meet current energy needs with a modern RNG facility.
Community Benefits
With the development of this new facility, the local community will benefit in several ways:
- Reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
- Creation of new renewable energy sources
- Decreased dependence on fossil fuels
- Support for the local economy through new jobs in the green energy sector
Towards a Sustainable Future
As Wasatch embarks on the next phase of landfill gas conversion projects into energy, the district continues to work closely with Ameresco to develop an RNG facility. This initiative is a great example of Wasatch’s commitment to viewing waste as a resource and creating sustainable opportunities for its community.
