E-Distribuzione, a distribution company owned by Enel, has secured funding of 250 million euros from the European Investment Bank (EIB). This funding is related to sustainability and aims to support the innovation and digitization of the Italian electricity grid.
This envelope represents the first tranche of a total agreement of 500 million euros and aims to improve the quality of energy distribution services, as well as to strengthen the resilience of the network in the face of future extreme climate events.
This initiative is part of Enel’s strategy to reduce direct greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1) to levels below or equal to 125gCO2eq/kWh by 2026, and to 72gCO2eq/kWh by 2030.

ToggleE-Distribuzione and Technological Innovation
The distribution company E-Distribuzione, owned by Enel, has received funding of 250 million euros from the European Investment Bank to drive innovation and digitization of its electricity grid in Italy. This ambitious project represents the first tranche of a total plan of 500 million euros. The main objective is to improve the quality of electricity distribution service while increasing its resilience to extreme weather events.
Impact on the Energy Transition
This funding plays a crucial role in aligning E-Distribuzione with Enel’s objectives for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Aiming to achieve direct emissions below 125gCO2eq/kWh by 2026 and 72gCO2eq/kWh by 2030 embodies a close integration of decarbonization initiatives. This plan also supports Enel’s massive investments, which expects to inject 43 billion euros into network projects between 2025 and 2027.
Integrated into the RePowerEU initiative of the EIB, this approach also contributes to reducing Europe’s dependence on fossil fuels. By increasing the use of renewable energies, the funding will help stabilize the electricity grid and promote a greener energy transition in Italy.
Future Opportunities and Challenges
The success of this initiative relies on E-Distribuzione’s ability to fully integrate technology and innovation. One of the major challenges is to modernize outdated infrastructures while facilitating the connection of new energy sources, notably offshore wind farms. Electric networks are at the heart of the energy transition, a topic already addressed in various publications such as those from the Governance Strategy, emphasizing the territorial governance of energy.
